Infra-red cameras are soon to be used at the German border with the Czech Republic and Poland for the detection of illegal immigrants. A spokesperson for the federal Interior Ministry in Bonn has said that infrareddevices had proven more effective than mobile radarinstallations in a test lasting several months. The cameras. which react to body heat and operate over a radius of two kilometres, have a hit rate of 60 to 80 percent, the speaker said. He however refused to confirm an report published by the tabloid Bild-Zeitung, according to which 60 cameras are to be purchased for a sum of 10 million Deutsch Marics.
